Personality is the most important factor in deciding who you’re going to trust with documenting your most cherished moments. Here’s the truth: You could love someone’s portfolio, but if you don’t vibe with them, it’s going to show in your photos!

Some photographers prefer to be a fly on the wall, capturing quiet, candid moments. Others (like me!) love to interact, guide, and create an experience where you feel comfortable, confident, and engaged. I’ll also be documenting the candid moments, but with some direction you’ll be in the best light and have your best angles captured. I also love chatting with my clients in advance so they can get to know me and ensure we are a perfect match for creating something genuinely awesome!

So before booking, take time to get to know your photographer—check out their social media, hop on a call, or meet for coffee and see if the vibes are right. A strong connection ensures a relaxed, natural shoot and photos you truly love.

2. An aligned, consistent editing style.

The beautiful thing about photography is that there’s no right or wrong way to take a photo. It’s truly an art, and every photographer has their own creative signature. Some lean toward bright and airy, others prefer dark and moody, and some embrace a true-to-life, natural look.

The question is: which one of these looks resonates with you? If you like their editing style, it’s a positive sign you’ll be happy with the final product.

Some of us (raises hand) have spent years studying photography at institutions like Emily Carr, while others have honed their craft through hands-on experience and workshops (also raises hand because we should always be learning and growing!)

Regardless of formal training, look for someone who continuously learns and refines their skills—whether through years of client work, mentorships, or personal projects. Photographers who invest in themselves tend to also care deeply about your experience and resulting images, which means you’ll get the amazing photoshoot and photos you deserve!

It’s easy to fall in love with a few stunning Instagram-worthy shots, but can they deliver an entire gallery that meets your expectations? A good way to figure out the answer is by looking at a full shoot gallery, not just their favs that made it on the feed.

A great photographer will be excited to share photos from your session, however it’s important they get your permission to use them for marketing or portfolio purposes. I firmly believe it should always be up to the client where their images are shown and shared.

Before booking, ask about their privacy policy. If you prefer to keep your images off social media, make sure your photographer respects and supports that choice like I do.

When it comes to booking any kind of photoshoot, it’s important to remember that pricing varies widely, and so do the details of what’s included.

Before you book your photographer, clarify:

Whether retouching/editing is included.
